“Building strong foundations, mastering maths for life.”

At our school, we provide a mathematics curriculum that is ambitious, engaging, and accessible for all pupils. Our intention is to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed both in their learning journey and in their future lives. We want every child to leave our school with a deep understanding of mathematics, ready to apply it to the world around them and to their future learning.

Our curriculum is based on a mastery approach to teaching mathematics, underpinned by the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation. This carefully sequenced approach ensures that learning builds securely on prior knowledge and gives all pupils the opportunity to develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematical concepts. We believe that success in mathematics is achievable for every child when they are given the right support, challenge, and opportunities to reason and problem-solve.

Our Approach to Mastery

  • Fluency, Reasoning, and Problem Solving are at the heart of our maths teaching. Pupils are encouraged to explore mathematics in depth, make connections, and articulate their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary.
  • New concepts are introduced using the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach. Practical resources and visual models support pupils in building secure understanding before moving on to abstract representations.
  • Small steps progression ensures that concepts are broken down into manageable chunks, enabling all children to achieve success. Where extra support is needed, scaffolds and additional practice are provided. Pupils who grasp concepts more quickly are challenged through opportunities to deepen their understanding rather than moving on to new content too soon.
  • Struggle and challenge are seen as valuable parts of the learning process. We encourage resilience, adaptability, and perseverance, helping children to recognise that mistakes are an important step towards mastery.

What Underpins Our Maths Curriculum

  • High expectations: All children are expected to make progress and achieve success from their starting points.
  • Modelling: Teachers demonstrate strategies and thinking clearly, providing strong examples of effective mathematical reasoning.
  • Language-rich environment: Talk for maths is central to our lessons. Key vocabulary and sentence stems are explicitly taught and revisited, supporting pupils in reasoning and explaining their ideas confidently.

Curriculum in Practice

From Reception through to Year 6, our teaching is guided by the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation materials, which ensure coherence and progression across year groups. In EYFS and KS1, the Mastering Number programme provides strong foundations in number sense, helping children to develop fluency, confidence and flexibility with number facts from an early age.

Daily teaching is supported with live feedback and questioning, as well as termly diagnostic assessments. These help teachers to identify gaps, plan interventions, and ensure that all children are ready for the next step in their learning journey.

Times tables fluency is also given priority from Year 3 onwards, with regular practice supported by engaging online tools such as TT Rock Stars and Purple Mash. Rapid recall of core multiplication facts provides a secure foundation for more complex written and mental strategies.

Our ultimate aim is that children develop a love of mathematics, a confidence in their abilities, and the skills to apply their learning beyond the classroom.
