Curriculum

Curriculum

At Sharow CE Primary School, everything we do is shaped by our vision that we promise to flourish together. Our curriculum reflects this by helping every child to grow, feel valued and succeed in a supportive, caring environment.

Our school values of health, growth and love are at the heart of daily school life and are woven through all learning experiences.

Preparing for the Future

We want every child to leave Sharow ready for the next step in their journey, having truly flourished both academically and personally.

By the time pupils leave us, we aim for them to be:

  • Kind, respectful and responsible, showing love for others
  • Confident and open to new ideas, embracing growth
  • Resilient and able to face challenges positively
  • Safe, healthy and aware of how to look after their wellbeing
  • Positive learners who take pride in what they achieve

We also ensure children develop strong skills in reading, writing and maths so they feel confident moving on to secondary school.

What your child will experience

Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, meaningful and enjoyable, so children are motivated to learn and eager to take part.

Through our focus on growth, learning builds step by step from Early Years to Year 6, helping children gain knowledge and confidence over time.

We make sure learning:

  • Covers a wide range of subjects
  • Helps children remember and build on what they already know
  • Encourages curiosity and a love of learning

How learning works

As a small school with mixed-age classes, we follow a two-year rolling programme (available at the bottom of this page).

Learning is carefully planned so that every child can flourish. We support this through:

  • Clear key knowledge for each topic
  • Regular opportunities to revisit learning
  • Teaching that supports and challenges all learners

Our approach reflects our value of growth, helping children deepen their understanding and build confidence over time.

Early Years and Key Stage 1

In Early Years, children begin their learning journey in a nurturing environment built on love and care. Through play and structured activities, they develop early skills in reading, writing and maths, as well as learning how to share, explore and become independent.

A key priority is reading. We believe that learning to read is essential for children to flourish across the whole curriculum.

In Key Stage 1, this continues with a strong focus on reading, writing and maths. Children are given lots of opportunities to read and be read to, helping them develop confidence, vocabulary and enjoyment in reading.

Bringing learning to life

We believe children learn best when they are inspired and excited.

That’s why we enrich our curriculum with:

  • School trips and visitors
  • Music, sport, drama and art
  • Creative opportunities across all subjects

These experiences support both growth and wellbeing, helping children express themselves creatively, develop new skills and enjoy their learning.

Supporting every child

At Sharow, every child matters. Our value of love means we create an inclusive environment where everyone feels safe, supported and respected.

We:

  • Celebrate differences and promote understanding
  • Support children who need extra help
  • Ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can achieve their best

Tracking progress

We regularly check how children are progressing to make sure they continue to grow in their learning.

This includes:

  • Ongoing feedback in lessons
  • Short quizzes and activities
  • More formal assessments at key points

This helps us support each child and celebrate their successes.

Wellbeing and wider development

Our value of health underpins everything we do. We care deeply about children’s physical and emotional wellbeing.

We encourage:

  • Active, healthy lifestyles
  • Time away from screens
  • Positive behaviour and strong relationships

Children also learn about respect, equality and how to stay safe, helping them become caring and responsible members of society.
