Science

At Sharow CE Primary School, we believe that science is a vibrant, exciting and inspiring subject that encourages children to explore, question and make sense of the world around them. We recognise that children are naturally curious, and our science curriculum is designed to nurture this curiosity while developing the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to think and work like scientists.

Science is taught using the Kapow Primary curriculum, providing a carefully sequenced and progressive programme of learning that aligns with the high-quality curriculum we use across our foundation subjects. Kapow ensures that children build their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills year on year through engaging, practical and purposeful learning experiences. The curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and supports children in developing a secure understanding of the three scientific disciplines: biology, chemistry and physics.

Throughout their time at Sharow, children explore a wide range of fascinating topics, including plants, animals including humans, materials, seasonal changes, rocks, light, forces, sound, electricity, Earth and space, states of matter and evolution and inheritance. These are taught through meaningful contexts that help children make connections between their learning and the world around them.

Scientific enquiry is at the heart of our curriculum. Children are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, make predictions, plan and carry out investigations, observe closely, measure accurately, record and present data, identify patterns, draw conclusions and evaluate the reliability of their evidence. As they progress through school, they become increasingly independent in selecting appropriate methods of enquiry and applying their scientific understanding to explain what they discover.

Practical investigation is a key feature of science at Sharow. Children regularly take part in hands-on experiments and enquiries, making full use of the classroom, school grounds and local environment. These experiences help to bring science to life, deepen understanding and develop resilience, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Our science curriculum also celebrates the work of significant scientists, both past and present, helping children to appreciate how scientific discoveries have shaped our lives and continue to influence the future. We encourage pupils to see themselves as scientists, understanding that curiosity, perseverance and critical thinking are essential qualities both in science and beyond.

By the time children leave Sharow CE Primary School, they will have developed a secure body of scientific knowledge, a strong understanding of how science works, and the confidence to question, investigate and evaluate the world around them. We aim to foster a lifelong love of science, a respect for living things and the environment, and an appreciation of the important role science plays in everyday life and in caring for God's creation.
