French

At Sharow School, we want every child to feel excited about learning a new language. French is taught in a fun, interactive, and confidence‑building way that helps pupils enjoy discovering how language works and how other languages connect with our own.

We follow the Kapow Primary French scheme, which provides a clear and well‑structured progression of skills. This ensures children build their knowledge step by step, revisiting and strengthening what they’ve learned through engaging activities. Lessons are lively, varied, and designed to spark curiosity; they are full of games, songs, stories, and role‑play that bring the language to life. Children might practise ordering food in a pretend café, join in with a catchy French tongue twister, or follow clues in a vocabulary treasure hunt. They also get to practise with our very own Monsieur Escargot, who visits from his usual home in EYFS sometimes to help pupils in Year 3 to Year 6 learn new words and phrases in a playful, memorable way!

We also explore French culture through our lessons – from festivals and traditions to food and famous landmarks – so that pupils gain a broader understanding of the world and an appreciation of different cultures and communities.

Above all, our aim is for every child to feel confident enough to ‘have a go’ and to develop a lasting enthusiasm for languages. By combining the structure of the Kapow scheme with our commitment to fun, inclusive learning, we help children build skills that will stay with them as they continue their language learning beyond Sharow School.
