Admissions

We are delighted to welcome families in discovering the exceptional education that Shaorw School has to offer by inviting you to arrange a personal tour with Jacqui Palmer, our Headteacher.  We are extremely proud to showcase our school and provide an opportunity for you to experience our uniqueness first-hand.  A new parent recently describes our school as having the ‘real charm of a village school’.  Come along and see for yourself.

For school admissions information and access to an electronic application form, please use this link to visit the School Admissions page of the North Yorkshire County Council website.

If you live within North Yorkshire and your child was born between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021, they are due to start school in September 2025. You need to apply for a primary school place by mid January 2025.

We understand each parent’s desire for their child to feel happy, safe and secure, and consider ourselves extremely fortunate to play a part in each child’s development.

Because every child is unique, we are offering personal tours when you can find out about the things that are important for your child and you.

If you would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 01765 604362 or email admin@sharow.n-yorks.sch.uk

We look forward to meeting you.

If you do not live in North Yorkshire you must apply to the authority where you live.

We would love to show you around our school. We do not offer one set day but prefer to offer individual appointments enabling families to ask questions specific to their child and to see our school in action.

National Offer Day

16 April 2025 is National Offer Day for primary and junior schools. If you applied online, you can log in to our admissions portal to see your offered school place. You will also get an email during office hours telling you about your offered place. If you made a paper application, you should get a letter telling you about your offered school place.

In-Year Admissions

Requests for admission for any year group during the school year should be made by first contacting the school office who will be able to clarify availability of places and make an appointment for you to meet the headteacher.

An in-year application can be made at any time of the year. Parents/carers can only apply up to a term in advance of the date they want the school place. The online form will allow parents/carers to apply for the year group their child should be in according to their child’s date of birth.

The admissions team at North Yorkshire Council start working on applications around six weeks prior to their requested start date and aim to process applications within 20 school days after that. However, if applications are made very early, this may not apply as they can only start processing applications towards the end of term, as follows:

Date child will join the school Earliest application should be submitted Applications will be processed from
January to March 1 September onwards 1 November onwards
April to July 1 January onwards 1 March onwards
September to December 1 June onwards 1 June onwards

Parents/carers can use the normal school application form for in-year applications.

Apply for a school place

How does the in-year admissions process work?

  1. It is parents/carers responsibility to read all the guidance before filling in their form.
  2. NYC Admissions receive the in-year application form requesting a school. The application will be processed no more than half a term (six weeks) in advance of when a place is required.
  3. NYC Admissions will contact parents/carers first preference school to determine if there are places available in the appropriate year group.
  4. If there are no places available at their first preference school, they will approach each school on their list in turn, in order of preference, to identify whether a place is available there. If there is not a place available at that school, we will look at their next highest preference and continue down the list until we can offer their child a place.
  5. Once they have allocated the child a place, they will confirm the allocation with parents/carers in writing or via email. Both the school the child was attending and the newly allocated school will be notified.
  6. If NYC Admissions have been unable to offer the first preference, parents/carers have the right to an admissions appeal. You can find out more about appeals here.

In-year fair access

All North Yorkshire schools operate collaborative arrangements for the admission of pupils under an in-year fair access protocol, as required in the admissions code. In-year fair access makes sure that unplaced children, especially the most vulnerable, and pupils who have been out of education for more than 2 months, are offered a place at a suitable school as quickly as possible. This includes admitting children to schools that are already oversubscribed. All schools contribute to this arrangement and will both lose and gain pupils under the protocol.
