Wormery!

This week in our classroom, we have been busy exploring our new learning theme: Habitats

We began by sharing some fascinating facts about worms and learning about the important role they play in our environment. The children were especially interested to discover how worms help keep soil healthy!

We then carefully followed instructions to set up our very own classroom wormery. The children showed great teamwork and listening skills as they helped layer the soil, sand, and organic materials to create a suitable habitat.

The highlight of the experience was heading outside to go worm hunting! With lots of excitement (and a little bravery!), we gently collected some worms and placed them into their new home, where they will stay with us over the half term.

This activity has provided a wonderful introduction to our Understanding the World learning, particularly linked to the EYFS Early Learning Goals in Science. The children are beginning to explore living things, their habitats, and how to care for them.

We will continue to observe our wormery over the coming weeks, noticing any changes and discussing what we see. Already, some children have been inspired to create their own wormeries through junk modelling—what fantastic creativity and curiosity!

It has been a hands-on, engaging experience, and we are looking forward to seeing what we discover next!
