The pupil premium grant is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England. It’s a school-level grant that gives schools extra resources to help them meet challenges, including those arising from deprivation.
It’s allocated for schools to:
- improve the academic outcomes of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities
- close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers across the country

Pupil Premium is funding that we receive from the Government. It is additional to our main school funding and paid with the intention that it is used to address the underlying inequalities between children and thereby to raise standards of attainment. It is to be used for the children who need it most and need is to be determined by the school. The payment which the school receives is based on the number of children receiving free school meals (or who have previously received free school meals), looked after children or children adopted from care on or after 30th December 2005 but there is no requirement to spend it on those children alone provided the objectives are met.
Schools are free to spend their Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, we will be held to account for how we have used the additional funding to narrow the gap for these targeted pupils. We are required to publish online how we have used the premium. This is to ensure that parents and other stakeholders are made fully aware of the impact of this additional resourcing on learning and achievement outcomes within our school.
Our approach ensures that all aspects of the school support children from disadvantaged backgrounds, by providing targeted support when it is needed. For example, when examining the progress of every pupil, teachers, the Leadership team and school governors look in detail at the development of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as those with other needs. It is by providing excellent teaching, tailored to the needs of every child, and specific support to enable pupils to catch up quickly or for those who are excelling to be stretched further.
We also recognise that to enable pupils to flourish, wider skills, talents and experiences, participating in clubs and school visits and journeys play an important role and should be accessible to all. We therefore will use some pupil premium money to pay for and subsidise these activities for those who would not otherwise be able to afford them. We monitor how each child is progressing and use this to inform which types of support are needed.
