At Sharow CofE Primary School, we aim to inspire children’s curiosity about the world and help them understand the places, people and environments that shape it. We follow the Kapow Primary Geography scheme, which provides a rich, engaging and carefully sequenced curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6.
Our Approach
Our geography curriculum is designed to build pupils’ knowledge step by step, revisiting important ideas so children develop a secure understanding of:
- Location knowledge – learning where places are in the UK and around the world
- Human and physical geography – understanding how people live, and how natural features like rivers, mountains and weather shape our planet
- Geographical skills – using maps, atlases, compasses, digital tools and fieldwork to investigate the world around them
Lessons encourage children to ask questions, explore real-life examples and make connections between their local area and the wider world.
What Children Learn
Across the year groups, pupils:
- Compare different countries and environments
- Study continents, oceans and major world features
- Learn how land is used and how communities change over time
- Explore weather and climate
- Carry out fieldwork and simple geographical enquiries
- Develop map-reading and problemsolving skills
Kapow’s resources help us deliver lessons that are active, handson and accessible for all learners.
Our Aims
Through our geography curriculum, we want children to:
- Develop a curiosity about the world
- Understand how they can care for their environment
- See themselves as global citizens
- Gain the knowledge and skills they need for future learning
