At Sharow CE Primary School, we believe that learning about personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education makes a big difference to our children’s lives.
We use the Kapow scheme as a guide, but we also adapt our plans to meet the needs of our pupils and our local community. This means the lessons are always relevant and meaningful.
How do we teach PSHE?
- Every class has a dedicated PSHE lesson each week.
- The topics are taught in a “spiral curriculum,” which means children revisit themes as they grow older, building on what they already know in an age-appropriate way.
We use lots of different approaches to make learning engaging—such as discussions, debates, stories, and written activities. Lessons are linked to real-life situations so children can apply what they learn to keep themselves safe and healthy, both physically and emotionally.
What about Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)?
RSE is an important part of our curriculum. It helps children understand what healthy, positive relationships look like—both online and offline—and teaches respect for everyone, regardless of differences like age, gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity, or religion.
We make sure this message of inclusion and equality runs through all areas of school life: classroom displays, resources, reading materials, and even playtimes. Our aim is for children to grow up embracing diversity and treating others with kindness and respect.
RSE also includes specific lessons on topics like puberty and sex education, taught in a sensitive and age-appropriate way. For more details, please see our Relationships and Sex Education Policy.
