In Year 3/4, we really enjoyed our practical maths lesson exploring addition and subtraction using 4‑digit numbers. We began by revisiting place value, using place value charts to partition numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones to help understand how each digit contributes to the whole. We then used part–whole models to break down and reconstruct numbers, allowing us to see the structure of addition and subtraction more clearly. Working with counters and place value equipment, we represented multiples and regrouped when necessary, helping them visualise exchanging across columns. Through a mixture of practical tasks and guided practice, we became more confident in using efficient methods to solve 4‑digit calculations accurately and independently.
